Sanya, known in ancient times as Yazhou, lies at the southern tip of Hainan Island on Sanya Bay, is the second-southernmost prefecture-level city nationally. The city is renowned for its tropical climate and has emerged as a popular tourist destination, also serving as the training site of the Chinese national beach volleyball team. The coastline in Sanya is 258.65 kilometers long, and the total sea area of 6,000 square kilometers. The main bays are Sanya Bay, Haitang Bay, Yalong Bay, Yazhou Bay, Dadong Bay, Moon Bay and so on. There are 40 large and small islands and 10 main islands. The resident population is about 650,000, including Han, Li, Miao, Hui and other ethnic groups.

Beaches, diving and seafood are the three eternal themes of Sanya tourism. They attract a lot of visitors from home and abroad year upon year. It is said that Sanya has the most well-preserved and beautiful beaches in China. All of the destinations of Sanya are linked to water, hence it attains its reputation as being the "Oriental Hawaii".

Wuzhizhou Island Tourism Scenic Area

Wuzhizhou Island, in Haitang Bay, has an area of some 1.48 square kilometers (366 acres). With an irregular butterfly-like shape and a total coastline of 5.7 km (3.54 miles), the island is about 30 km (18.6 miles) north-east of Sanya City. Soft white sand stretches as far as the eye can see beside a crystal clear blue sea, where protected coral reefs are rich in conches, sea urchins, sea cucumbers and tropical fishes of various colors. As well as Goddess Matsu Temple, there are many places of interest to visit including the Lover's Bridge, Sunrise Rock, the Gold Turtle Stretching toward the Sea, Lover's Island and the Life Well. The Sunrise Rock is the ideal spot from which to observe the sunrise. In addition to the natural attractions of the island, tourists are certain to be pleased by the delightful catering facilities here. In the south of the island there are the Buffet Lunch Restaurant, the Pirate Bar, the Seafood Pool and the Chinese Restaurant all providing excellent food. The Summer Western Food Restaurant in the east corner and the Winter Western Food Restaurant in the west corner of the island also offer a choice of delicious food. Local caught lobsters, prawns, crabs, conch, sea cucumbers and jellyfish will make your mouth water! Furthermore, this island is rich in fruits; Bananas, coconuts, mangos and other tropical fruits are plentiful and inexpensive.

The Remotest Corners of the Globe

Tianya Haijiao (literally edge of the sky, rim of the sea), which is 23 kilometers (about 15 miles)away from the downtown center, just as its name means that it will take you to the end of heaven and earth. Ancient history recalls a beautiful love story that relates to this particular beauty spot that is enhanced by a blue sky and pure, clear seawater of Tianya Haijiao. There are three famous huge rocks here that attract lots of visitors, and many who take photos in front of them, as the Chinese characters of Tianya, Haijiao and Nantian Yizhu are respectively engraved on them.

Coconut Dream Corridor

The Coconut Dream Corridor is a seaside scenic avenue built around Sanya Bay. Being in the environment of blue sea and coconut trees, strolling along the scenic avenue or on the beach, you can get a good sense of the beauty and relaxation of Hainan. The area is also famous for its evening sunsets and night scenery, and at night you can eat barbecues and drink beer on the beach and watch street performances. The Coconut Dream Promenade is 20 kilometers long and stretches along the bay, with coconut palms forming a forest stretching westwards to Tianya Bay.

The city is served by Sanya Phoenix International Airport. Taxis are available throughout the city.

Buses from other parts of Hainan serve Sanya's bus terminal. The No. 8 bus connects the airport to Dadonghai Beach. From there tourists can take the 24 or 25 bus to Yalong Bay or the 28 bus to Haitang Bay. There is also a free bus from Luhuitou Square to the Duty-Free Shopping Center at Haitang Bay, the largest such center in China.
